ABOUT NAUTICOR LEGAL

Nauticor legal is owned and operated by M. John Mate, Bachelor of Arts (Memorial University) Juris Doctor (University of Windsor), a Barrister, Solicitor and Notary Public that is licensed to practice law in Canada and the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador.  In the mid-1990’s John started his legal career on Bay Street working for what was then and still is one of the largest law firms in Canada, Fasken Martineau.  While at Fasken’s and later in his career he has representing some of Canada’s largest companies in complex matters.  However, in the late 1990’s he declined a lucrative, long term offer with that firm to return to Newfoundland.   In Newfoundland he worked for two other large law firms in St. John’s becoming an equity partner in just five years, years and later becoming the Chair of the Marine and Fishery Practice Group and Co-Chair of their Real Estate Group at what was then the largest law firm in Newfoundland and one of the ten largest in Canada.    However, having accomplished what he wanted at the large law firms for over 15 years, John started Nauticor as a boutique operation in 2011, focusing on the areas outlined elsewhere on this site.  

When not working, John is worldwide traveler, he is active in outdoor activities, including cruising around Newfoundland’s beautiful coast, hiking and fishing around Port Rexton, Newfoundland, where his father and other ancestors were born and where he maintains a home.  He is also a regular salmon fisher on various Rivers. 

John is past director of the Newfoundland Historic Trust, a past treasurer of the Resource Centre for the Arts and he is an avid Toronto Raptors and Montreal Canadians fan while also playing recreational basketball.
